Maybe you also heard plenty of scare stories about the health risks of travelling in India. But today standard of hygiene and sanitation have increased greatly in India so the risk to travelers appears to be extremely low. 4 weeks before departure all travelers should visit a travel health clinic. Don’t forget to bring an antibiotic and an ant diarrheal drug if significant diarrhea occurs. Because of the risk of malaria especially pregnant women should avoid traveling to India. Do not drink tap water, not bottled beverages or drinks with ice during your holiday. Avoid all type of food and beverages obtained from street vendors. Wear long sleeves, long pants, hats and shoes (rather than sandals) for protection yourself from insects, sun etc. Especially be sure your health insurance covers you for medical expenses abroad.
You should call 102 for public ambulance in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Calcutta.
